Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a financial assistance of Rs 1,600 crore for flood-hit Punjab as he reviewed the situation and damage caused by the deluge to the state.

Modi announced the assistance for the border state in addition to the Rs 12,000 crore already in the state's kitty.

The PM also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured in the floods and natural calamity.

Earlier, he took stock of the flood situation and also conducted an aerial survey of the flood-ravaged areas in Punjab.

Modi, who was on a day-long visit to Punjab and neighbouring Himachal Pradesh to review the flood situation in the two states, landed in Gurdaspur -- one of the worst-affected districts in the state -- after conducting the aerial survey.

Prior to this, he visited Himachal and took stock of the flood and landslides situation in the state.

In Gurdaspur, Modi met flood-affected people as well as NDRF and SDRF teams.

Modi chaired an official meeting in Gurdaspur with officials and elected representatives and reviewed the relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken as well as assessed the damage that has occurred in Punjab.

Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Khuddian, Union Minister Ravneet Bittu and Revenue Minister Hardeep Mundian were also present in the meeting.

There will be advance release of the second instalment of SDRF (State Disaster Response Fund) and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi.

The PM emphasised the need for a multi-dimensional approach to help the entire region and its people recover.

This would include measures such as rebuilding homes under the PM Awas Yojana, restoring national highways, reconstructing schools, providing relief through the PMNRF (PM National Relief Fund), and distributing mini kits for livestock.

The PM expressed condolences to the family members of those who have lost their lives in the natural calamity and stated that the Union Government will work closely with the state governments in this difficult time and extend all possible assistance.

He also met families from Punjab who were affected by the calamities and floods and expressed solidarity with all those who had suffered and expressed deep sorrow for those who had lost their close ones.

Punjab is currently facing one of its worst flood disasters in decades. The floods are a result of the swollen rivers -- the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi -- along with seasonal rivulets caused by heavy rainl in their catchment areas in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Besides, heavy rains in recent days in Punjab also aggravated the flooding situation.

The death toll due to the devastating floods in Punjab stands at 51 while crops on 1.84 lakh hectares have been damaged.

This is in terms of total manpower capacity as well as potential value of production. The plant, built on nearly 300 acres, began test production of the new iPhone model this April.

The factory currently employs around 25,000 workers, about a quarter of its full capacity of 100,000, people familiar with the details told ET.

Of the total workforce, nearly 90% are young women trained over the last four months to work on the latest iPhone models, the people said. Capacity at the factory vastly surpasses that of other Apple suppliers in India, including Tata Electronics or the erstwhile Wistron, and Pegatron, said executives in the know.

India has rapidly emerged as a major production hub for Apple. The country supplies nearly half of all iPhones sold in the US, and India-made iPhones are now made available globally on the first day of sales, unlike in the past, when initial demand was catered to by China and India-made phones came after a lag.

“Apple has been steadily shifting its supply chains (away) from China in a bid to diversify,” said an executive working in the electronics sector. “Such huge factories used to make iPhones in China and the same will now happen in India, with the country’s largest factory now starting operations.”

India has about 200,000 operational factories currently, employing around 19 million, generating an average staff count per factory of 95 people, with half of the units employing less than 20 people, said Balasubramanian A, senior vice president at TeamLease Services. “But there are certain big factories which hire tens of thousands of people, so the average is skewed to nearly 100,” he said.

Experts said currently there are only a few factories in the country with a staff strength of more than 30,000. For instance, Foxconn’s plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, with 40,000 people is among the largest currently.

Foxconn and Apple did not respond to queries.

The new iPhone factory in Bengaluru also has working women hostels for housing tens of thousands of workers, making it like a mini city.

The iPhone 17 will also be produced across factories of other Apple suppliers, including Tata Electronics units in Narsapura and Hosur in Karnataka; Foxconn’s facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu; and the Tata Pegatron facility, also in Tamil Nadu.

“All of these factories have come up to speed for the first time to launch all new iPhone models for India, and from India, across the world,” said an industry executive.

In the last few years, Apple has been pushing to time the launch of its latest iPhone models from its Indian factories along with those in China. Last year, the Cupertino-based company launched the iPhone 16 simultaneously across the world with the Pro and Pro Max models introduced in India within a few weeks of their global launch.

This year, however, due to the massive capacity building at Indian factories, all iPhone models including Pro and Pro Max will be rolled out at the same time from local factories to serve the global market.

Apple’s production boom followed the launch of the Indian government’s smartphone production linked incentive (PLI) scheme in 2021. Factories of Apple suppliers in the country are currently among the largest, not only in the electronics sector, but across the entire manufacturing system ecosystem.

In FY25, Apple’s vendors produced $22 billion (factory price) worth of iPhones, of which nearly 80% was exported. So far, in the first four years of the PLI scheme, Apple through its vendors in India, has crossed production worth over $45 billion and $34 billion in exports.
